The Netherlands was represented by Greetje Kauffeld, with the song '"Wat een dag", at the 1961 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 18 March in Cannes, France. For the first time the Dutch entry was chosen internally with no National Songfestival being held. Kauffeld had taken part in the three previous Dutch preselections of 1958, 1959 and 1960.

At Eurovision

On the night of the final Kauffeld performed 6th in the running order, following Yugoslavia and preceding Sweden. At the close of voting "Wat een dag" had received 6 points (2 from Italy and Yugoslavia, and 1 from France and Germany), placing the Netherlands joint 10th (with Finland and Monaco) of the 16 entries. The Dutch jury awarded its highest mark (3) to the United Kingdom.[1]
